Packaging buying guide
What affects custom packaging cost in Malaysia?
Custom packaging is quoted from a production specification, not from size alone. The most useful comparison keeps structure and finish consistent while testing realistic quantity tiers.
The practical answer
The main cost drivers are the flat sheet area and layout, board grade and GSM, print specification, finishing, tooling or setup requirements, assembly complexity and production quantity. A lower unit price at a higher quantity may require more total spend, so compare both unit and total value.
Structure and flat area
Two boxes with the same finished dimensions can use different sheet areas because flap, tuck, glue and locking structures differ. An approved dieline is the clearest basis for final production.
Material and GSM
Heavier or specialist boards affect material use, stiffness, print surface and converting. The right choice depends on product weight, pack size and presentation—not GSM alone.
Printing
CMYK, Pantone colours, inside printing and coverage change the production specification. State the colour system and sides to be printed.
Finishing
Lamination, varnish, Spot UV, foil and embossing add process steps. Area, tooling and registration requirements can matter as much as the finish name.
Quantity tiers
Setup and tooling are distributed across the run, while material and production needs scale with quantity. Ask for the actual tiers you may buy.
A fair comparison
Compare quotations using the same size, board, colours, finishes, quantity, delivery scope and artwork status. Otherwise the lowest headline number may describe a different pack.
