  • • Every quantity tier you want compared
  • • Artwork, dieline or a reference box when available

Clear packaging specification

One term, several common names

In Malaysian packaging discussions, “unit box” commonly means the printed secondary carton holding one product. Search terms vary by industry, so we also use folding carton, product box and retail carton where they describe the same structure.

Structure

Straight-tuck, reverse-tuck, sleeves and other suitable folding-carton structures can be discussed against the product and packing method.

Material

For suitable folding-carton work, Toprint can quote art-card options from 180gsm to 400gsm, subject to final structure and availability review.

Print

Toprint can quote offset or UV print specifications with CMYK and Pantone requirements, subject to artwork and production review.

Applications

Unit boxes for branded retail products

  • Cosmetics and skincare
  • Supplements and healthcare
  • Food secondary packaging
  • Household products
  • Electronics and accessories
  • Lifestyle and gift products

Finishing that supports the artwork

For presentation-led packs, Toprint can quote finishing such as matt or gloss lamination, hot foil, embossing and Spot UV.

Toprint's packaging workflow can include die-cutting, creasing, gluing and a defined quality-control step.

Material options

Choose board around the product, structure and desired feel

For suitable folding-carton work, Toprint can quote art-card options from 180gsm to 400gsm, subject to final structure and availability review.

300gsm art card

A common reference point for ordinary folding cartons where fit, folding and presentation are balanced.

Subject to structure review

350gsm art card

A heavier option that can provide a stiffer feel when the span and carton structure suit it.

Compare against product weight

Kraft appearance

Useful when an uncoated, natural presentation supports the brand and print requirements.

Print result varies by stock

Specialty board

Selected coated, grey-back or other board directions can be discussed against the job.

Availability must be confirmed

From dimensions to dieline

A unit-box quotation needs the finished pack and the production route

Finished dimensions

State length × width × height in millimetres and confirm the product orientation inside the carton.

Structure and open size

A reverse-tuck, straight-tuck, sleeve or special base can use a different flat area. Supply a dieline or reference when available.

Board and GSM

Toprint can discuss suitable art-card options from 180gsm to 400gsm, subject to structure and availability review.

Quantity tiers

Quote each realistic volume independently—for example 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 pieces—so setup and run economics are visible.

Printing and finishing

Use finishing to support the artwork—not to decorate by default

Matt or gloss lamination changes the overall surface. UV varnish and Spot UV require different coverage instructions. Foil and embossing need exact artwork areas and production review.

  • Confirm CMYK, Pantone or a combined colour specification
  • Mark selective finishes on the artwork
  • Review folds, glue areas and high-rub surfaces before production

Finishing options at a glance

Matt lamination

A lower-reflection film finish with a restrained appearance.

Gloss lamination

A reflective film finish that can make colour appear more vivid.

UV varnish

A cured coating used over a broader printed area when specified.

Spot UV

Selective gloss contrast applied to marked artwork elements.

Embossing

Raised detail created with tooling; artwork position and folds matter.

Hot foil

Metallic detail applied to a defined area, subject to material and tooling review.

Print and presentation

Specify the effect, not just the finish name

CMYK and Pantone

CMYK suits photographs and broad colour reproduction; Pantone references can define important spot colours. Many packs use both.

Lamination and varnish

Matt or gloss lamination changes the overall surface; UV varnish and Spot UV must identify whether coverage is broad or selective.

Foil and embossing

Mark the exact artwork area. Tooling, coverage, position and interaction with folds or other finishes require production review.

Unit-box questions

What is a unit box?

A unit box is an individual printed carton for one retail product. Depending on the buyer, it may also be called a folding carton, product box or retail carton.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the finished size, preferred material or GSM if known, printing colours, finishing, artwork status and every quantity tier required.

Can Toprint quote more than one quantity?

Yes. Send all required quantities, such as 5,000 and 10,000 pieces, so each tier can be costed and presented separately.

Which finishes can be discussed?

Verified options include matt or gloss lamination, hot foil, embossing and Spot UV. Suitability is reviewed against the carton structure, material and artwork.

What is the difference between finished size and open size?

Finished size is the assembled length, width and height. Open size is the flat extent including panels, flaps and the glue area. The structure or dieline is needed to confirm the final open size.

Is 300gsm or 350gsm better for a unit box?

Neither is universally better. Product weight, panel size, structure, board grade, grain direction and desired feel all matter. Toprint reviews the complete specification rather than choosing from GSM alone.
